The 2024 Ultimate Guide to Back-To-School Shopping with a Big Family

Hey NEN Fam!

It’s that time of year again–back to school! When I was a young girl, I absolutely loved back-to-school shopping, especially for school supplies. That excitement is something I’ve always wanted to pass on to my kiddos. If you’re like me and want to make sure the experience is fun and memorable, here are my top tips and tricks to make back-to-school shopping as smooth and enjoyable as possible, especially with multiple kids!

1. Stick to the school lists

School supply lists can be long and detailed, so make sure you’re following them closely to avoid last-minute trips back to the store. Double-checking the lists before heading out can save you time and money.

2. Utilize hand-me-downs

If you have multiple kiddos of different ages, take advantage of what the older ones used in the grades the younger ones are moving up to. This can mean physical items like calculators or just a list of items they actually used in that grade so you don’t buy anything extra. This not only saves money but also ensures the younger ones have everything they need.

3. Keep the kids fueled

Back-to-school shopping can be a long process, to make sure everyone is well-fed and hydrated. Bring along snacks and drinks to keep energy levels up and prevent anyone from getting “hangry!”

4. Divide and conquer!

Instead of trying to handle everything yourself, let the kids take charge of their own shopping lists! Older kids can pair up with younger ones, helping them find their items while promoting responsibility and independence. The little ones love feeling grown-up when they get to be in charge of their own supplies!

5. Approve the kids’ items only when it’s their turn

Avoid the constant “MOM!” calls by designating specific times to approve the kids’ items. They can quietly gather their supplies and bring them to you when it’s their turn. This not only speeds up the process but also reduces the stress of having to make decisions on the fly.

6. Stock up on essentials

Remember what your kids ran out of quickly last year. For us, it’s pencils! These small essentials are worth buying in bulk

7. When in doubt, don’t open it

If you’re unsure about an item, wait to open it until you can clarify with the teacher. This way, you can return it if it’s not needed, saving both time and money.

8. It’s okay to say no

It’s tempting to say yes to every request, but sometimes you have to say no, especially if your kids are asking for multiple items that aren’t on the list. Remind them of what’s essential and stick to it.

Back-to-school shopping doesn’t have to be stressful. With a little planning and these tips, you can make it a fun and productive experience for the whole family. Happy shopping!
